Announcement:

APHD ‘Founding Father’ passes away

To the Family of Tom Johnston,

It is with great sorrow and a sense of loss that APHD in Bangkok received news of Tom Johnston’s passing in Canada.

As one of the “Founding Fathers” of the Asia Partnership for Human Development (APHD), it was his vibrant spirit that moved the bishops of Asia, in the 1970s, towards acceptance of a new concept for development partnerships and the birth of APHD. Asia is grateful for his utmost commitment to APHD during and even after his term at our partner in Canada, Development and Peace. In the more than thirty years of APHD’s existence, that vision of Tom – a north-south partnership that would accompany Asia’s poor and marginalized in their struggles to help themselves – has been and is being realized.

Tom’s passing has left the field of international development much poorer. However, even as they pass away, great people leave an indelible mark. Tom is one such man. The lives and the parts of the world he has touched are a testimony to that greatness. He shall always be remembered by APHD with respect, admiration, gratitude, and love.

We share your sorrow and our prayers are with you.

      With sincere sympathy,

      Teresita D. Suselo
      Executive Secretary
      Asia Partnership for Human Development
      (On behalf of APHD)
