For the past eight years APHD has been working with NGO Partners andlike-minded groups to disseminate knowledge on sustainable agriculture techniques. Through the Southeast Asia Sustainable Agriculture Program support has been provided towards strengthening farmer's networks for the promotion of sustainable agriculture techniques that are both economically viable and socially just. An integral part of the Program has been the Annual SEA Farmers' Conferences.
Beginning in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1995, these Conferences have provided the main forum to pursue the Program's objectives. Issues tackled include; product marketing, integrated farming and the effective use of micro-organisms. The Conferences have alsofacilitated the creation of a community seed bank and the exchange of seeds from traditional rice varieties. Exposure tours held during the Conferences allow participants to see sustainable agriculture techniques in use. During this year's Conference, held in Bangkok, a Regional Plan of Action for the coming year was developed. The plan allows for increased training on areas like pest and disease management, further assistance to community-based farmers and advocacy for farmer's rights.
